Victoria Beckham talks to Hilary Alexander about her sense of style, rumours of her husband's knighthood and why she's nervous about showing David their new home in LA As Victoria Beckham arrived for the Graduate Fashion Week gala in Battersea Park, London, on Wednesday night, a wag in the photographers' pack called out: "Hey, Posh, where're your shorts?" Victoria Beckham with designer Alber Elbaz at the Graduate Fashion Week gala Mrs Beckham had the wit and the grace to grin, as she posed in a silk patchwork mini-dress by British designer of the year Giles Deacon - a more fetching and flattering outfit than the extraordinary hotpants-and-corset combo she'd worn to the Glamour Awards a couple of nights previously, to which the snapper was referring. Accessorised with flesh-tone, seamed tights, leather driving mittens and metal-spike heels, the curious ensemble divided the nation - or at least those of the nation who care about these things.

The outfit, it turns out, was by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel - which is ironic, seeing as Coco Chanel is the woman credited with freeing women from corsets in the 1920s - and Victoria absolutely loved it, she told me. She could not understand why some hadn't and was genuinely at a loss as to what might have been wrong. "I loved the shorts," she said.

"Most people would have put black tights with them, but I loved the idea of flesh tone and the seams, and I really liked the corset. Karl Lagerfeld thought it was cool and that's good enough for me." What did I think, she asked, knocking the ball straight back into my court.

Desperately trying to be diplomatic, I managed to stutter something about having seen her in better outfits. She looked genuinely puzzled and a little hurt; I felt as if I had kicked a cat.
