Can you tell if someone has had a boob job? Celebrities are easy to pick - especially as we are often privy to pre- and post-op pap images - but what about the woman on the street? Have surgery techniques improved so much and has breast enlargement become so commonplace (or subtle) that fake ones look natural?
I have my doubts. Augmented breasts are generally higher and rounder - so much so that ''enhanced'' women often cannot find bras that fit properly. A special bra to cater to their special shape (the No9 Mystere bra) has been a bestseller since its launch at Harrods.
So presumably their ''perfect'', ''ideal'' shape is unusual and therefore unnatural looking. A friend I was discussing this with today says she can pick the fake breasts at the beach by the ''line'' under the skin from the top of the implant (skinny Victoria Beckham has it). ''The girls also strut around with their chests sticking out,'' she said.
She reckons men are not as astute: her husband can't pick the fakes ones. But there must be a reason there is a porn mag niche of ''all-natural, guaranteed 100-per-cent-not-fake'' ones. Does it even matter that breast implants do not look natural but like an idealised version of the (currently fashionable) female form?
If you have implants, are you happy with the way they look? If you don't, can you pick them a mile off and if so, does this apply in winter also? Are boob jobs convincing?
