is the Fanhouse's look at the day's most intriguing baseball matchups

New York Yankees (21-26) vs.

Los Angeles Angels (30-20)-1:05PM Est.

Can you name the only American League team that has a winning record against the New York Yankees since took over? If you can't, you're pretty stupid.

I mean, it's obvious isn't it? The Yankees are playing the Angels right now, so why would I be asking the question if they were playing the Royals? The Angels look for their first sweep in the Bronx since August of 2004, and have won 17 of their last 25 games against the Yankees.

gets the start for the Halos, and looks to become the first pitcher in baseball to notch his 8th victory of the season.

Atlanta Braves (28-21) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (25-24)-1:05PM Est.

Could today be the day? was ejected from his second straight game yesterday, and is now just . Where's all the pomp and circumstance for this one?

Why isn't in Atlanta right now preparing to honor Cox? Shouldn't some of s relatives be at Turner Field for this? This is history we're talking about here, not some dumb ass home run record!

Baltimore Orioles (22-27) vs. Oakland Athletics (24-24)-1:35PM Est.

Is there a light coming over the horizon for the Orioles?

A big reason the team is five games under .500 is the fact that has sucked this season. In the first 45 games, Tejada only managed to hit two home runs.

Well, he must have found himself a big old bottle of B12 because he's homered twice in the past three games, and is heating up. I don't know if he'll be joined in the lineup today by , but one thing's for sure: . If not, we might have a tantrum of epic proportions on our hands.

*Okay, everybody

We here at the MLB FanHouse will be musing twice a month until the end of the season on who we think leads the .

This is the third installment.

National League: Jake Peavy

We've been waiting for somebody in the National League to take over just as Josh Beckett has taken over the American League. And now, we have our first N.

L. Cy Young leader who really has a . Jake Peavy saw his streak of consecutive 10-K games come to an end on Tuesday night, but he's still a monster.

His ERA is 1.63, his WHIP is under a buck, and he's 6-1 with 77 K's. And don't try to tell me that he's a product of the spacious Petco Park.

His ground ball to fly ball ratio coming into Tuesday's game was 1.33, and he gave up only four fly balls out of 18 outs against Chicago on Tuesday.

Also in the mix:
Francisco Cordero: 0.

47 ERA, 17 saves in 20 games, one earned run in 19 innings.
John Smoltz: 6-2, 2.85 ERA
Cole Hamels: 6-2, 78 K's
Tim Hudson: 5-2, 2.

42 ERA

American League: Josh Beckett

Even with his recent trip to the DL, there's still no reason to knock Beckett off the top of the list at 7-0 with a 2.66 ERA. But watch out for John Lackey of the Angels.

Lackey has won five of his last six starts, has a season ERA of 2.38, and has only given up more than three runs once all season. People who saw him in spring training said he has the kind of stuff that could win him the Cy Young award this season.

If he can cut down on the walks he would be right there with Beckett. Right now, he'll have to settle for second chair.

Also in the mix:
John Lackey: 7-3, 2.

38 ERA
Dan Haren: 1.74 ERA, 54 K's and 13 walks
C.C.

Sabathia: 6-1, 67 K's
Justin Verlander: 5-1, 2.68 ERA

The Fanhouse's look at the day's most intriguing matchups

San Francisco Giants (22-22) vs. Houston Astros (21-23)-10:15PM Est.

When and last met five days ago, they .

Both pitchers combined to throw 14 innings without giving up a single earned run. Since life just isn't fair, neither factored into the game's final decision. If Roy wants to get a win tonight, he's going to need some help from his offense.

In their last two games, the Astros have been outscored 18-1. That's not going to win many ballgames.

Philadelphia Phillies (22-22) vs.

Florida Marlins (21-23)-7:05PM Est.

If you haven't had a chance to see pitch, I strongly suggest you tune into tonight's Phillies game. The young lefty phenom is 6-1 with a 3.

30 ERA and isn't likely to disappoint. His mission tonight will be to help the Phillies hold off on becoming the first franchise in . They currently sit at 9,978.

A win won't be easy tonight as they face and Marlins team on a current three-game win streak.

Detroit Tigers (27-16) vs. Los Angeles Angels (27-18)-7:05PM Est.

Two of the American Leagues best teams start a three-game series tonight at Comerica Park. is 6-3 with a 2.43 ERA and starts for the Halos tonight.

He'll be looking to extend the Angels 5-game win streak. If we're lucky, maybe he'll tell us all about it . The Tigers will start , who has benefitted from a surplus of Tigers offense when he's on the mound.

He's 3-0 on the season despite having a rather pedestrian 4.69 ERA.

John Lackey, he of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim fame, recently started over at . I had the chance to interview him through e-mail over the weekend about his foray into the blogosphere, his recent commercial shoot with Derek Jeter, if he's ever met fellow Abilene,Texas native Jessica Simpson and what he thinks of A.

J. Pierzynski.

Here it is for you:

You recently blogged about your experience on that new Gatorade commercial with Derek Jeter and Harvey Keitel -- can you talk a little about what that was like?

"The commercial was a cool experience. I've never really done anything like that. It was weird the first time I saw it on TV, I had to take a double-take.

It's amazing how much time it takes to shoot such a short commercial."

In addition to baseball, you also played basketball and football in high school. What positions did you play and ever wish you were still on the hardwood or gridiron?

"I played quarterback in football and was a power forward in hoops. Speaking of hoops, that dunk by Baron Davis on (Andrei) Kirilenko (Friday) night was sick. One of the best dunks I've seen, especially in the playoffs.

All the guys in the clubhouse were talking about it (Saturday morning). Wow."

Some other pitchers, namely Curt Schilling, have gotten into the blogging game this season.

What do you like about the experience and do you see a point in the future where a majority of players are blogging?

"The blogging experience has been fun. I've really enjoyed seeing the fan base grow and seeing how people respond.

It's nice to give the fans some insight to my life, not only as a player, but a person as well. Thanks to all of you who have been reading the blog. I do think more athletes will be getting involved with blogs.

It seems like it the newest trend in sports. From Schilling to Arenas, big names are getting involved on the blog scene."

We can add another pitcher to the growing list of baseball players with blogs. John Lackey of the Angels has started his .

It doesn't seem to be as personal as , but it does add some valuable insight into the way things work inside a baseball team.

We have Detroit in town for a two game set starting tonight. To prepare, our entire pitching staff meets together before the start of every series to go through the lineup we're about to face.

We just finished our meeting about the Tigers. They have a tough lineup from top to bottom. Guillen, Polanco, Ordonez and Sheffield are always tough outs.

We have a meeting room, it's like a board room with a big table in the middle. Our pitching coach, Mike Butcher, sits at the head of the table and leads the discussion. We go through every player on the roster, watch video of them and talk about their tendencies and strengths.

While the video is playing, Mike reads the scouting report. These meetings usually last around 30 minutes.

Nothing groundbreaking, but interesting none the less.

Of course, my personal favorite of the three entries so far have to do with playing in cold weather and against the Indians in Milwaukee.

I'm fired up to be back on the west coast. It's been a brutal trip.

The weather was crappy back east and we've been getting our butts kicked. It's just been a crappy trip. We had to go to Milwaukee last week to play Cleveland.

I've never heard of anything like that. It was snowing in Milwaukee too, a lot. I'm a Texas guy.

I've never seen it come down like that.

Somebody buy John a thesaurus. There are so many other words for crappy.

Poopy. Sucktastic. Execrable.

These are just a few, there's a whole world of fun and exciting new words for you, John!

(A sexually harassing pat on the butt to )
