Fans of this '90s sitcom were initially presented with a four-disc best-of DVD package in 2005; this is usually a sign that no full release is planned or an attempt to test the market. Mad About You completists can relax: the first season is on local release and others have come out overseas. But fans will probably be disappointed with the dearth of extras on this two-disc, 22-episode set.
Mad About You is a romantic comedy of marriage, a tricky genre with complexities the show never really explores. It deals with a newlywed New York couple coping with relationship crises, career ambitions, demanding friends and troublesome family members. It won plenty of awards in its time but it hasn't aged particularly well.
Helen Hunt, as the sprightly wife, Jamie, made the transition into features and won an Oscar for As Good as it Gets. Paul Reiser, who played filmmaker husband Paul, went on to mine some of the same ground, writing books about couples and fatherhood.
