CANNES: Actor Rupert Everett took inspiration from Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, when preparing for the part of the headmistress in a remake of the classic schoolgirl comedy St Trinian's.
The 47-year-old actor, appearing at the Cannes Film Festival to promote the movie, which is currently in production, called the former Camilla Parker Bowles "my type of girl." "She's a marvellous woman," he said at a news conference.
"She strides around, she works in the garden and she goes out to parties. She wears nice hats and dresses, she has wonky teeth, she's got a sense of humour, she likes a drink and a cigarette." Everett plays the headmistress, originally performed by Alastair Sim when the first St Trinian's film was released in 1954.
"You can't do it better than Alastair Sim, to be honest, in St Trinian's," Everett said. Co-director Oliver Parker spoke of the "incredible modernity" of the first two films in the original franchise. "They still stand up superbly in certain areas.
They're a picture of subversion with great wit and charm," he said. "It is a kind of English high school comedy in certain respects. You have to try to update it.
Certain things are a bit edgier and more challenging." In the 2007 version, the naughty, ungovernable girls use their charm and guile to save the school from bankruptcy in an anarchic romp. Everett co-stars with actor Colin Firth, and it appears the pair have put behind them reported past disagreements from when they filmed "Another Country" together over 20 years ago.
"Rupert has mellowed a little bit, and I've become a bit more unpleasant," said Firth, star of Bridget Jones's Diary.
