Shooting injures man in Sylmar SYLMAR - Police were investigating the shooting of a 21-year-old man who was hit three times in the leg yesterday in Sylmar, police said. The incident occurred at 12:15 p.m.

Sunday on Glenoaks Boulevard and Hubbard Street, police said. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition, police said. NORTHRIDGE - A vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver collided with an LAPD squad car in Northridge today, sending an officer to the hospital to be checked out, police said.

The crash occurred at 2:30 a.m. at Roscoe Boulevard and Corbin Avenue, police said.

There were two officers in the cruiser when it was "clipped in the rear" by a vehicle, police said. A female officer, whose name was withheld, was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution. She does not appear to have suffered serious injury.

Damages to the car were minor. The man driving the other vehicle was not injured and was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, police said. His name was not immediately released.

Accused racketeer to appear in court The owner of Los Angeles' Numero Uno supermarket chain is set to be arraigned in federal court today on racketeering charges that include allegations that he ordered three slayings and bribed a city planning commissioner. George Torres-Ramos, 50, of Arcadia, is due to answer to the charges this morning at the Roybal Federal Building. Press reports have said that a prosecutor said her boss, City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, pressured her to drop a 2001 misdemeanor case against Torres-Ramos.

His brother, Manuel Torres-Ramos, son Stevie Torres and five other defendants are also due in court today, including ex-planning commissioner Steve Carmona, who Torres-Ramos is accused of bribing, and another former planning commissioner, George Luk, who now sits on a city convention center commission and is accused of conspiring with Torres-Ramos. The 59-count racketeering indictment unsealed following the brothers' arrest last month alleges George Torres-Ramos and his 53-year-old brother, who also lives in Arcadia, were involved in the killing of a worker at the 11-market Numero Uno chain. Two killed in car crash COVINA - Two people were killed in a vehicle crash in an unincorporated area of Covina, the CHP said today.

The accident occurred at Arrow Highway and Lark Ellen Avenue about 11:20 last night, police said. A 38-year-old man and a woman, 25-40 years old, died at the scene, officails said. A preliminary investigation revealed that two vehicles were involved, one of which then struck a pole, he said.

It was not immediately known if there were any other injuries, he said. The cause of the accident was under investigation. Woman shot in Boyle Heights A woman who showed up at a hospital in Boyle Heights last night had been shot, police said.

It was unclear where the shooting occurred and how the woman, in her early 20s, arrived at County-USC Medical Center, police said. She was in stable condition, he said. Triple-digit temps fan fire fears The first heat wave of the summer is expected to kick off today with temperatures predicted to be in the triple digits in Woodland Hills, Palmdale and Lancaster.

The only place for a respite from the heat will be the beaches, where highs will be in the 70s. Lifeguards reported that hundreds of thousands of people flocked to area beaches over the weekend. The Southland is under a Red Flag Warning, meaning a high risk of wildfires, until tonight, but that could be extended until Independence Day, when the hottest weather is expected.

Wind could gust to 50 mph, and authorities are warning drivers to be cautious while high-profile vehicles along the Interstate 5 corridor. Also, firefighters are warning folks not to light fireworks. With the hot and dry conditions, authorities are concerned they could start wildfires.

Last night, an estimated two tons of illegal fireworks were seized from a garage and van in the 1200 block of East 100th Street, at Central Avenue in Watts. Besides the Red Flag Warning, a Gale Warning was in effect through late tonight in the waters off the Southland Coast. Highs are expected to be 88 in downtown L.

A.; 96 in Burbank, Pasadena and San Gabriel; 103 in Newhall; 104 in Woodland Hills; and 105 in Palmdale and Lancaster. It could be as high as 111 on Thursday in Lancaster and Palmdale.

Blazes burning from Santa Barbara to San Diego As Southern California headed into its first heat wave of the summer, firefighters were tackling blazes from Santa Barbara to San Diego early Monday. Firefighters in Los Angeles County fought a 50-acre blaze along the Golden State Freeway near Pyramid Lake on Sunday before it was contained in the early evening. The blaze was ignited by an RV that caught fire, officials said.

Authorities were gaining ground on a 482-acre fire in the Los Padres National Forest northwest of Santa Barbara, which started Saturday evening and was 60 percent contained early Monday, according to a U.S. The blaze had closed some campgrounds, but no residents had been ordered to leave their homes.

Meanwhile, a pair of wildfires burned near the town of Julian in eastern San Diego. The larger of the two had consumed 110 acres and was 20 percent contained by Sunday night, authorities said. The other blaze to the west blackened about 60 acres.

Both were expected to be contained Monday. The fires came as a heat wave hit the area and forecasters reported Southern California had just ended its driest year on record. In the rainfall year beginning July 1, 2006, only 3.
