Purpose: Gateway's FX530 computer boasts the power of four computer processors. Can it be the ultimate computer to make work life and leisure life run faster, smoother and better is finally here?
The lowdown: When the Gateway FX530 dream machine arrived at my office, all the geeks stopped by.

This machine not only has Intel's first quad-core processor, but Gateway also tweaked the settings to make it perform faster than Intel intended (it's overclocked to 3.2 GHz from Intel's 2.66 GHz).

The computer came with Intel Core 2 Extreme processors; hence, two dual-core processors produce the quad-core capability. (Competitor AMD plans to offer four processors on one quad-core chip later this year, by the way.) There were also 2 gigabytes of memory, two fast 150 GB hard drives (at 10,000 RPM), two ATI Radeon X1950 XT CrossFire graphic cards and two optical drives (no high-definition DVD, but a 16x multiformat double-layer rewritable DVD drive).

And it came with a nice, big, 24-inch widescreen monitor. Everyone slobbered over that, too.
Gateway had earlier told me that while gamers would love the machine, regular people would find a quad-core computer useful.
