Hidalgos celebrate 60 years of marriage

Raul and Toni Hidalgo will celebrate 60 years of marriage on May 5. In 1944 at Jeffery's Barn in Burbank, Raul Hidalgo, 20, met Toni Gasca, 16. They were married on May 5, 1947, in Glendale.

Raul was born in La Puente in August 1924. He attended North Hollywood High School, was drafted into the U.S.

Army in March 1943 and discharged in October 1945. He served more than two years overseas on the island of Luzon, Northern Solomons and New Guinea. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.

After completing his tour of duty, he worked several years in construction. In 1951 he obtained a job with the city of Los Angeles, where he worked until his retirement in 1978. Toni was born in Glendale in July 1928.

She graduated from Glendale High School in 1947. In 1948, Toni and Raul started their family. For the next 30 years, Toni was a homemaker and seamstress.

From 1978 until her retirement in 1988 she worked at the Los Angeles Unified School District as a bilingual aide at Roscoe Elementary School in Sun Valley. on valleynews.com.
