I definitely disagree with you about Errol Flynn though. While getting a ton of tail in his day certainly does make him cool, I would have to say that he doesn t offer anything more than most of his contemporaries which is absolutely nothing. I m not certain of when exactly it happened, but there was a point in time when film actors finally figured out what they were doing.
After that we have truly modern cinema. Before that we have actors doing their very best to create quality work without understanding how to go about doing so. I don t feel Flynn understood exactly how to do his job.
I m not saying he s not a talented actor well, actually I am. Maybe it would be most accurate to say that he may have been talented, but I ve never seen anything of his that made me say to myself, He has talent. Steve McQueen?
Really? Don t get me wrong I love McQueen. is, in my opinion, the single greatest war movie ever made.
That opinion is largely due in part to McQueen (and James Garner to be honest). Given that McQueen does sort of play variations on his own basic personality I would dare say that there are other actors who seemingly do the same thing who might deserve to be on the list more. Jack Nicholson and Sean Connery anyone?
I d take out Bogart and replace him with Cary Grant. Pacino at seven. I ll come back to this.
I don t know if I agree with you on this one either. However, given the fact that Brando was one of the first actors to get it and he helped usher in the era of modern cinema he may deserve to be on the list by default. Just for clarification what he got was what Errol Flynn didn t.
I think Sean Penn, Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman are all open debate. By that I mean I don t disagree with them as choices and I think that they may very well deserve to be on the list. I might not pick them, but I very well might pick them.
De Niro at number one. This is where I ll come back to Pacino. It s tough to choose because an argument could be made that Pacino and De Niro are practically the same actor.
They ve been around for roughly the same amount of time and they probably both still work about as often as the other. On top of that they ve played a number of roles that are virtually indistinguishable from each other. To make my point let me give you a segment of fictional dialogue: Aw, who was that actor in that movie?
I definitely disagree with you about Errol Flynn though.
