Sven-Goran Eriksson got off to a winning start with his new team as he saw Manchester City beat Doncaster Rovers 3-1 in their pre-season friendly at Keepmoat. The Swede coach had a scare early on after his defence was in disarray, allowing Sean McDaid for the home side. But three second half goals from Bernado Corradi, Emile Mpenza and a great solo effort from Micah Richards ensured a comfortable victory for the ex-England manager's first game in charge.

Eriksson was upbeat about the match and his return to club football. It's good to be back. It's been a long time since I was sat on the bench.

"I was not nervous today, but I might be in the future in big Premiership games and so on. "In the second half we were much more disciplined. It's always good to win.

(The win) was not the most important thing. The most important thing was to see the players in a real game." Eriksson also indicated that he wanted some more new faces at City, and was looking towards the future.

He said: "I will bring more players in. I think we need that. "We will not win the Premier League this season, but I hope we can play good football and bring on some young players for the future.

"The fans are extremely important for us. The City fans are very good. I know that because Iwas coming here for 4 and a half years.

" West Ham boss Alan Curbishley made 10 changes at half time during his club's match at neighbours Dagenham and Redbridge, which was a testimonial game for Daggers goalkeeper Tony Roberts. Scott Parker was one of those, and Curbishley's ex-captain at Charlton wore the armband as he led out the Hammers for the second period. Striker Dean Ashton also came on to make his first appearance for almost a year, since he sustained an ankle injury while training with England last August.

The Hammers had to wait until the 75th minute before Mark Noble converted a free kick won by Julien Faubert to give them the lead on the way to a 2-0 win. Neither Fernando Torres or Ryan Babel were on display for Liverpool's friendly against Crewe at Grersty Road, giving Peter Crouch the opportunity to show he still has a place at Anfield. Crouch scored either side of Lee Peltier and Ray Putterill to help Liverpool cruise to a 3-0 victory.

Arsenal overcame their neighbours Barnet 2-0 at Underhill, thanks to goals from Manu Adebayor and Dutch youth striker Nacer Barazite. Gunners midfielder Denilson collapsed with an ankle injury in the second half, but medic's reports after the match indicate that it is not serious. Portsmouth also enjoyed a 2-0 win away to Yeovil Town, with goals from Lomana Lua Lua and triallist Giovani sealing the win.

Their local rivals Southampton romped to a 4-2 victory just down the road from St Marys at Eastleigh. The Saints went 1-0 down to a Scannell goal, before goals from McGoldrick, Hammill, Liecha and Bradley Wright-Phillips put the game beyond doubt, with a Forbes penalty salvaging some pride for the Spitfires. The shock of the day came at Marston Road, where Stafford Rangers held Premiership new boys Derby county to a 1-1 draw, with young Paris Simmons getting the goal for the Rams.

Shrewsbury Town opened their new ground, New Meadow, with a 4-0 win over A Line All Stars, an invitational team that included Gianfranco Zola, Gus Poyet, Grahame Le Saux and Carlton Palmer. Earlier on, Bolton beat Chivas Guadalajara 2-0 in the Peace Cup in South Korea, with new signing Zoltan Harsanyi and captain Kevin Nolan getting the goals.
