BRIDGEPORT A grieving grandmother on Wednesday demanded to know what authorities are doing to hold a Monroe driver accountable for the July 4 death of her granddaughter. Tayana West, of Stratford Avenue, said she has been calling police, the mayor and the state's attorney's office asking whether additional charges will be lodged against Clayton Luf, 41, of Glen brook Drive, in Monroe. West's granddaughter, 20-month-old Kay'Anah Brayboy was pinned underneath a Mercedes driven by Luf when it careened off Connecticut Avenue in front of the Connecticut Food Mart.
The toddler, who was accompanying a male cousin to the store when she was struck, died early Tuesday of head and pelvic injuries at Yale-New Haven Hospital. "I was holding Kay'Anah in my arms at the hospital when her heart stopped and she died," West said. "Her family was there her mother, her other grandmother and all her aunts and uncles.
My son was her father." Luf, free on $2,500 bond, is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of breach of peace and interfering with an officer Wednesday in Superior Court. The charges stem from his interaction with officers in the aftermath of the crash.
But West wants to know why Luf has not also been charged with drunken driving, even though, according to police, he admitted drinking before the crash at Ray's Bar in Stratford. James Viadero, police spokesman, has said police are awaiting the results of tests on samples of blood and urine taken from Luf, who was treated after the accident for a cut over his eye at St. Viadero said the test results will be part of the investigation that may lead to more charges against Luf.
A funeral service for Kay'Anah Brayboy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in Holy City Church at Boston and Noble avenues.
