Leslie Feist, who releases albums under her surname, drops The Reminder Tuesday. Jon Pareles, a critic for The New York Times, calls the Canadian s latest effort a pop gem that is sometimes intimate, sometimes exuberant, filled with love songs and hints of mystery.
A T-shirt and jeans singer/songwriter, Feist has the allure of, say, Cat Power without the emotional baggage at least outside of her songs.

The success of Brit s such as Corrine Bailey Rae, Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, have opened doors for pop singers who are more about songs than baby dolled-up looks. Feist could become a pop star. Her last album, Let it Die, sold 400, 000 copies worldwide and 118, 000 in the U.

S., according to The New York Times.
Publix won t ever be known for its music selection, but it has been pleasant on grocery trips to hear Feist s Mushaboom played alongside soft-rock ballads.

Feist s music is shifty, moving from electro-pop to acoustic pop, and it includes Latin-inspired elements. She s friends with Broken Social Scene and Peaches, and The Reminder was produced by Gonzales, so that could explain why her music is so diverse.
1, 2, 3, 4 : With lyrics like, money can t buy you back the love that you had then, this song makes me think of Patrick Dempsey in Can t Buy Me Love.

Let it Die : Feist turns in a soulful effort like that of Jill Scott, making lyrics like The saddest part of a broken heart/ Isn t the ending so much as the start stab like a goodbye phone call.
Mushaboom : The captivating folk-rock track is dancey, and it captures the rise in tension in a cramped financial situation. Feist sings: It may be years until the day/ My dreams will match up with my pay.

One Evening : From Open Season, a CD of Feist remixes, One Evening is turned into a club jam with Feist s hovering sultry vocals. It s reminiscent of Madonna, only with better vocals.
