KEVIN Costner, who enjoys playing flawed characters in middle age, takes the full plunge in Mr. Brooks, where he seems to be having a ball as a serial murderer who also happens to be Man of the Year in Portland, Ore. Brooks, a philanthropist who runs a thriving box factory, attends AA meetings where he describes himself as an addict.
He doesn t mention that he s addicted to killing people in a highly meticulous manner for the sheer excitement of it all. He s had his addiction under control for a couple of years when his sarcastic imaginary alter ego, Marshall (deliciously played by William Hurt), goads Mr. Brooks to resume his lurid hobby.
