(which she co-wrote to an Oscar nomination and in which she starred alongside Ethan Hawke) as a comedy with less romance and more side splitting character idiosyncrasies, though all the added laughs do not make up for the lack of emotional resonance that made really stand out from the crowd. Delpy not only directed , but also wrote the screenplay and the music, produced and edited the film and stars as the French half of a French-American couple touching down in Paris after what should have been a romantic getaway in Venice before returning back to the States. As a quirky and smart multicultural arthouse comedy, the film will find niche engagements in European arthouses in big cities and a great afterlife on DVD.

The Franco-German co-production stars US actor Adam Goldberg as Delpy s neurotic boyfriend of two years. Together they stop over two days in Paris to stay with her parents before flying back to New York. These two mad days turn into a demonstration of everything that divides the French 35-year-old photographer Marion from her American 35-year-old interior designer Jack: she is French and he is not, and he is American, and she might want to adapt but not in front of her parents, sister, ex-boyfriends and acquaintances, who are all from France.

Delpy s own parents star as Marion s parents and seem to relish the opportunity to be directed by their daughter; German thespian Daniel Br hl ( ) gets third billing but only makes a cameo appearance as a German fast-food terrorist fairy (no, really). Delpy gets a lot of mileage out of the numerous clich s that exist about the French and the Americans, often using well-known punchlines in unexpected ways (watch out for the importance-of-a-blowjob conversation -- priceless) but since all characters seem to exist mainly as representatives of their respective countries, they lack strong personalities of their own. Their egos are certainly big enough to ensure regular verbal fireworks ( It s your ego that s too big for Italian and French condoms, not your dick Marion at one point remarks), but they should have been a bit more specific to make a more lasting impression after the lights come up.

For 90-odd minutes of hilariously filthy, neurotic and nationalistic relationship humour, however, 2 Days in Paris is all you will need this season. This film was screened as part of the 2007 Berlin Film Festival. Also read the interview with Julie Delpy about 2 Days in Paris Browse for DVDs, soundtracks, books and more: amazon.
