Johnny Depp's greatest film role is Captain Jack Sparrow. Sparrow, the central character in the massively successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, received 57 per cent of the votes, well ahead of Depp's portrayal of Edward Scissorhands, which garnered 17 per cent. Depp's pirate performance has been credited with fuelling the success of the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which together took more than $US1 billion worldwide.
The third film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, is set for release later this summer. The 43-year-old actor based his portrayal of Sparrow on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who plays his father in the eagerly anticipated third instalment. Movie bosses were initially said to have been worried about Depp's offbeat interpretation of Sparrow, but the risk paid off when his performance earned him an Oscar nomination.
The actor's performance as Willy Wonka in 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was named his third best, while his portrayal as Constable Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow was fourth. 1. Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean (57 per cent) 3.
Willy Wonka - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (6 per cent) 5. Raoul Duke - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (4 per cent) 9. John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester - The Libertine (2 per cent) 10.
Don Juan - Don Juan DeMarco (1 per cent)
