Record looms in Bombers-Eskimos showdown

All eyes will be on receiver Milt Stegall on Friday as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos meet two weeks after their thrilling tie on the opening night of the season. Stegall's next touchdown will make CFL history, an accomplishment he would no doubt like to achieve in front of the home fans at Winnipeg's Canad Inns Stadium. Stegall is tied with Mike Pringle and George Reed with 137 touchdowns, the most ever in the league.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers veteran receiver Milt Stegall is one play away from taking sole possession of the CFL's all-time TD record. Reed first set the mark in 1975, Pringle matched it in 2004, and Stegall tied it in the first meeting of the clubs this season. "They should make a big deal of it, and give him the honour that he's due," Pringle told Sun Media earlier this week.

"Because he's been a very good ambassador of the game, not [only] the record being a pretty prestigious record, one that stood, before I tied it, for a number of years." The Blue Bombers and Eskimos played to a 39-39 tie in the opener at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on June 28. Charles Roberts's rushing touchdown in overtime — his fourth of the game — tied it for Winnipeg after Ricky Ray had thrown his fifth touchdown of the game to give the Eskimos the lead.

The two clubs took divergent paths in their second games last week. Winnipeg (1-0-1) spotted Montreal the first 13 points before prevailing 32-23 in their home opener. Greg Bearman's special teams recovery of a Montreal fumble in the end zone kickstarted the turnaround, with quarterback Kevin Glenn throwing a pair of touchdowns.

Edmonton (0-1-1) followed up their prolific offensive showing by failing to score a touchdown against the Lions in B.C., losing 29-9.

Ray and the Eskimos will now have to get back on track in Winnipeg, where the team has won just once in its last eight games. Coach Danny Maciocia made a surprise move earlier in the week, electing to start Ron McClendon at running back against the Bombers despite the fact that first year back Tyler Ebell has rushed for 153 yards on 24 carries so far this season. Maciocia said McClendon was sharp in practice after sitting out the first two games with a hamstring injury.

Edmonton's offensive line will have a challenge in regrouping from the B.C. Defensive linemen Doug Brown and Gavin Walls each have three sacks for the Bombers.

Slotback Jason Tucker is expected to play for Edmonton on Friday despite a knee injury. Winnipeg receiver Derick Armstrong, meanwhile, is not expected to play due to a knee injury, which only figures to increase the defensive focus on Stegall. Glenn, who has passed for a league-leading 709 yards, will look to Chris Brazzell and Terrence Edwards to help free up space for Stegall in his quest for the record.

Veteran Winnipeg kicker Troy Westwood will be back in the lineup after seeing his consecutive game streak snapped at 279 last week. The 40-year-old Westwood made just one of four field goal attempts in the season opener, giving way to Rob Pikula. Pikula did not fully seize his opportunity against Montreal, going 2-for-4 in field goal attempts.

With a win, the Bombers will take the lead in the CFL East. Edmonton would move into third in the West with a victory. Winnipeg will hit the road for a game in Montreal next Thursday, while the Eskimos host Saskatchewan the following night.
