'Pirates' plunders box office despite critics

In Britain, the film had the biggest opening weekend of the year with ticket receipts of 13.4m between Friday and Sunday. Cinemagoers on bank holiday Monday pushed the total up to 17.

3m. In the film, Johnny Depp's character Jack Sparrow is consigned to Davy Jones' Locker and has to be rescued by his former crew members. Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios' marketing and distribution, said the "record-breaking response" of the global box office was "nothing short of incredible".

But the movie has not met with universal acclaim. The magazine Time dubbed it "at wits' end", complaining that it makes "no sense whatsoever". CNN reviewer Tom Charity weighed in: "The entire franchise seems on the verge of collapse, propelled to construct ever more grandiose flights of fancy.
