Few films generated more buzz coming out of last spring's Cannes Film Festival than Richard Kelly's "Southland Tales." Of course, the buzz was almost all negative and the film vanished from sight. Now, according to Variety, a reworked version of the ensemble may be going to theaters, not that there's any kind of release timetable.
The film is just one of several acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Groups both for Sony-related companies and for unaffiliated partners. In the case of "Southland Tales" and Guy Ritchie's similarly savaged "Revolver," the partner in question is Samuel Goldwyn Films. "Southland Tales" is a semi-musical ensemble piece starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Mandy Moore and Justin Timberlake, among others.
Kinder reviewers described the early cut from the "Donnie Darko" director as over-long and incoherent. "It's a film that's intrinsically interesting to people," Scott Shooman, exec director of acquisitions and production, tells the trade. "People will want to talk about it.
