July 6, 8:41 am Supermarkets spared in 2nd Ave subway build Two Food Emporiums on 86th and 63rd streets will not, as originally announced, be closed to make way for the Second Avenue subway. The MTA has retooled its plans to spare the two supermarkets because of the high costs associated with acquiring the properties. Real estate costs for the first segment of the Second Avenue subway are reportedly around $245 million.
