Rigid Shard of Balance Hooking up with producer Britton Rice, who eventually jumped aboard as the band's full-time drummer, Polydream's debut EP Rigid Shard of Balance is a mixed bag at best. Most of the E.P.
s cuts undoubtedly sound like anything on Canadian rockers Default's last album or from other such purveyors of humdrum rock - Tonic, The Calling, Theory of a Deadman or Nickelback to name a few. Songs like "Juner" and "Everything Else Comes to Life" cannot help but make listeners yawn repeatedly, to the point where any alternative listening experience would provide refuge (traffic jams, construction, Jamie Foxx - anything). Of course there are some brief moments that break up the monotony.
The electronic remix of "Catch Me If You Can," and the live "Got a Good Feeling," are both decent cuts, the latter track could easily pass for a studio production. Unfortunately these flashes of distinctive quality are not enough to save Polydream's Rigid Shard of Balance from becoming a distant memory. Sure, many people will enjoy this record, but for those who like their rock to push boundaries, here's hoping for an enormously different second release.
