Yeah so Lebron James is all that. By the way he mauled the Pistons yesterday, you d never know that he s just a 22 year old kid. But his immaturity does come out when he is asked a mildly challenging question at a press conference or to address any cause that does not involve slamming over some 7-foot chump.
Apparently, . Shame.
I am reminded of a debate we had a couple of months ago about the role of athletes in society. There is no question in my mind that they have more influence than the average person and therefore theirs is a bigger responsibility. No, Lebron never asked to matter on issues like this but unfortunately, he does.
He claims he s not informed; well he better get informed and take a stand because otherwise he just comes across as an ignorant kid who would have done well to at least drop by a college at some point in his 22 years.
Isn t it weird that I m actually not a fan of the NBA s new age limit?
This is incredibly stupid.
Why should a kid take a position on something he knows nothing about? Personally, I find it kind of refreshing that a 22 year old celebrity would keep his pie hole shut.
Maybe he will inform himself about it, and then maybe he will take a position.
But what bothers you isn t that he s not informed, but that he hasn t take your position (one I agree with, by the way) before getting informed.
Personally, I support keeping your mouth shut about subjects you know nothing about. We need more, not less, of it.
Larry,
Talk about spouting off while not being informed on a subject. This whole thing started because Lebron James did not sign a petition concerning China s relationship with Darfur that was being passed around by his teammate Ira Newble. I assumed that Imran s position on Darfur is somewhat reflected in the petition, otherwise there s no point in making this post at all, except perhaps simply to bash Lebron over any issue available.
I hardly think this assumption was groundless.
Regardless, my assumption has no bearing whatsoever on my half-baked argument. If my assumption was incorrect, then it merely means that Imran was making an even more ridiculous criticism than I originally thought, in that he wants Lebron to take a position on China s relationship with Darfur, even if Lebron knows nothing about it AND that opinion differs significantly from Imran s.
So, my original assumption was actually quite charitable of Imran.
And why get on Lebron and Lebron only? Do you know Britney Spears position on Darfur (she has a little more free time to read up on these things than Lebron does these days)?
Do you care? How about Paris Hilton? Did Kobe Bryant sign the petition?
Or Dwyane Wade? Do you even know? Do you even care?
Had you even thought about it before criticizing James for not signing it?
For crying out loud, the guy is a 22-year-old basketball player who is almost single-handedly carrying a team through a play-off run. Personally, I think I ll look elsewhere for leadership on the whole Darfur thing.
