Labour unveils star endorsements

Labour yesterday unveiled significant endorsements late in the Holyrood campaign, including actor Robbie Coltrane, broadcaster Muriel Gray and football commentator Archie McPherson.
It also won the endorsement of another party leader. John Swinburne, leader of the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party, urged people to back Jack McConnell's candidates on the constituency vote and his own candidates for the regional option.

With the SNP building momentum through such endorsements - yesterday it won the support, at least for its sports policy, of Scotland rugby captain Jason White - Labour has found it hard to keep up.

No real surprise about SSCUP when you see people like Pat Lally etc in it.

Its obvously a retirement home for Labour politicians.
I agree with Tommy Sheridan, they have just cut their own throat.
[bold] All these dark secret forces hope for independence so that they can have unelected, undemocratic power.

.. [/bold] Ha Ha Ha Ha!

For the SNP not vote, dark side they are. She even looks a bit like Yoda. Or maybe it's the Illuminati or David Icke's lizards she's worried about.

My favourite little gallus numpty. If the electorate vote for the SNP then how's that undemocratic? [bold] What a future Scotland that's going to be.

Hello, banana republic! [/bold] The old song. We're too stupid to run ourselves without turning into some kailyard facist state.

What a cringy wee turnip. I take it she's encouraging us to vote for the party which willingly took part in the war which has killed over 650,000 civilians in Iraq and wants to base new WMD on the Clyde. All these dark secret forces hope for independence so that they can have unelected, undemocratic power.

I am amazed at John Swinburne's endorsement for Jack McDonald's party.

It will be a tactical error on his part.

OMG _ that settles it I will vote for SNP if she is backing Labour. She is getting a bit paranoid in her old age.

[bold] It's a very complicated issue. I would think, probably, eventually I would like to see independence but only an independent Labour Scotland. I think this is the way to go.

[/bold] This is what the tub of lard said in 1992. Note the oxymoron, ..

.an independent Labour Scotland. Robbie lad, the Labour party are fanatic Unionists.

It's Labour or independence, not both. LABOUR'S big answer to the artists for independence group, Robbie Coltrane, was brought out yesterday and promptly shook the party's platform by saying he believed eventually in independence.[/bold] Keep it on message this time Robbie.

You're endorsing Iraq, Afghanistan, ID cards, PFI, Cash for Peerages, WMD on the Clyde and no pensions. [bold]Not[/bold] independence. It's a very complicated issue.

Not independence.

DougtheDug, supporting Labour does not mean supporting each and every dot and comma of Labour policy. I'm Labour but I opposed the war on Iraq. Do the majority of SNP members condone reducing the amount of aid which would flow from Scotland under independence?

I doubt it, but then I doubt they support very much beyond independence.
Going back to the original point, I don't like star endorsements for the sake of having a celebrity on board. I don't think they contribute anything particularly constructive to an election.

My reaction to this article, like most of others of this nature is really so what . People like Robbie Coltrane would carry a stronger voice if they spoke on behalf of the arts or their field rather than simply being touted as a celebrity backer.

Muriel Gray's lost her marbles by the sound of this paranoid ramble. Scary stuff indeed - it'll be a return to the Auld Kirk and witch burnings after independence.

What are we supposed to feel here? Persuaded? All this proves, ultimately, is that lack of imagination and political short-sightedness affects actors, munro bagging ex-TV stars and OAP football commentators.

Errmmm, sorry - still voting SNP - for actual reasons and all. See through the Labour lies and spin Scotland. SNP for people power and democracy 1,2 and 3.

The pensioners sole rep has perhaps lost his wits!

He has certainly cut the throats of all those who voted for him - or should that be he has stabbed them in the back!
On the day when Broon says he will not work with Salmond - they betray just how anti democratic Nu Labour are! As Arrogant as Thatchers Tories!

It seems that Labours celebrity backers have one thing in common a suicidal lack of intelligence!
Oh hold me back Agnes ! Scotland's favourite exoskeleton with a voice that could break glass, the bald ginger nut and a big tumshie say they are backing Labour - well there's another heap of votes for the SNP.

Another own goal there wee joke!!

The Senior Citizens' Unity Party have effectively just declared they will help to prop up Labour in power for four more years (I seem to recall they said as much a few months ago anyway). This makes their manifesto a complete fraud. What's the use of paying lip-service to the idea of abolishing the council tax when you're determined to put into government the one party (apart from the Tories) that wants to keep it?

I have to agree with others about Muriel Gray. I don't doubt her good faith, I'm sure it all makes perfect sense inside her own head, but she seems to have lost the plot years ago. As long as she's not threatening to bring back The Mauve Cagoule or whatever it was called, I suppose we should probably try and humour her.

Its just sad to read Muriel Grays comments.
Encouraging continued regional status for her country because of some unfounded fears that make no logical sense.
That's right Muriel, better just keep toeing the line.
