Three masked gunmen robbed an armored truck Friday after one of them assaulted the driver at an Atlas Road gas station and ordered the passenger to drive down a dirt road, authorities said.
The driver, David Jones, 54, was severely injured on his face, head and upper body, Richland County Sheriff s Department spokesman Lt. Chris Cowan said.
The passenger, Darryl Frierson, 21, injured his neck and shoulder, an incident report said.
Both were taken to Palmetto Health Richland about 1 a.m.
, the report said.
They were released and are doing fine, said Robert Montgomery, senior vice president for operations at Express Teller Services, which employs the men.
Investigators said a large amount of money was taken, but they would not give an amount.
We re still interviewing the victims, and we re still in the process of trying to piece it together, Cowan said.
After fueling the truck at Circle K at Atlas and Bluff roads about midnight Thursday, Jones was about to get back in, when he was struck in the face by a gunman, the report said.
He was forced into the truck and pushed between the seats as he struggled with the gunman, authorities said.
The gunman ordered Frierson to drive down White House Road about two miles and stop, the report said.
Two other gunmen were waiting, authorities said.
Frierson was ordered to open the armored compartment and was overpowered by the men as he tried to fight back, the report said.
He was shoved and bound with duct tape, the report said.
Jones managed to dial the company s telephone number before one of the men took his phone and broke it, the report said.
The gunmen fled in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, authorities said.
According to the report, Jones walked to a Bluff Road club to call for help. No arrests have been made.
Montgomery said the employees did their job as they were trained to do their job.
