Email to a friend | Print Friendly *In the wake of over Angelina Jolie’s casting as someone of a different race in “A Mighty Heart,” the woman she portrays in the film has now come forward to address the uproar. Mariane Pearl, the wife of slain journalist Danny Pearl, is of Afro-Cuban and Dutch descent, but is played by Jolie, who is white with one-fourth Iroquois blood on her late mother’s side.
Some critics view Jolie’s casting as nothing more than modern day blackface. The actress told journalists that race took a back seat to the bigger goal of conveying the strength and tenacity of Mariane Pearl’s fight to find her kidnapped husband. Pearl, herself, echoes the same sentiment in Time magazine.
"I have heard some criticism about her casting, but it is not about the color of your skin. It is about who you are,” she said. “I asked her to play the role - even though she is way more beautiful than I am - because I felt a real kinship to her.
