For most people, one life partner is more than enough. But not for Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton), a hardware store owner who lives in a state of secret polygamy near the mountains in Utah. Henrickson has three wives and seven children, shacked up in three adjoining houses.

Clearly thrilled with the copious sex, Henrickson is not so enamoured however of the in-laws, one of whom - a father-in-law, Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton) - is hounding him for money. When Grant gets heavy, Henrickson is forced to call for help but must do so without jeopardising his domestic arrangements. Polygamy makes for rich pickings, loaded with what would seem irreconcilable dilemmas - legal, emotional and sexual.

ably exploits these tensions without passing judgement, giving us a glimpse at a world of competing affections and brittle-as-eggshell relationships. For most people, one life partner is more than enough.
