Subscribe to Archivestuff Have your say After starring in a decade of mediocrities, Robert De Niro's best film since Heat is one he directed. The Good Shepherd is an extraordinarily fine drama about the loneliness and soullessness of being a spy. Flashing back and forth in time, it chronicles the recruitment and rise of a CIA agent (Matt Damon) from the wartime forerunner of the agency through to 1961's Bay of Pigs crisis.

Rich in character, atmosphere and suspense, it?s an epic mix of Machiavellian intrigue and Cold War brinkmanship tinged with marital turmoil and crushing betrayal. The extras are limited to 15 minutes of deleted scenes that add a fascinating new dimension with a surprising subplot that isn't superfluous.

The Good Shepherd is rated M. Out now through Universal Pictures. Do you agree with this review?
