A Supergirl for Smallville

In the third season finale of "Smallville,” there emerged a candidate for the show’s own Supergirl. Adrianne Palicki, now known best to "Supernatural” fans as Sam’s girlfriend Jess, made her debut on what was then The WB playing a mysterious girl whose name was Kara, though her character turned out to be a red herring not from anywhere near Krypton or its red sun. But now, an official Supergirl has been chosen slated for her "Small” screen arrival as Kara Zor-El for the seventh season of the hit CW series.

Laura Vandervoort will be playing the part of Kara/Supergirl in what many expect and some hope will be the final season of the series that has explored Clark Kent and his small town origins in rural Kansas as he discovers his powers, his identity, and his grand destiny. Vandervoort has made appearances on several sci-fi/fantasy genre shows such as "The Dresden Files” and "Mutant X,” but the cable series "Instant Star” is what the Canadian 22-year-old is recognized for, though she is what almost all other young actors from "Smallville” were, a newcomer. After all, time and time again Superman has been filled with relative unknowns who spring to life in the roles they land riding the cape of World’s Greatest Hero.

People.com talked to "Smallville” co-creator Al Gough about her role as she enters the corn fields of Smallville: "She’s a combination of beauty, intelligence, a certain warmth, and great attitude,” explained Gough. "We've wanted a character to shake things up.

She may be Clark Kent's cousin, but that doesn't mean she's going to be the obedient one!” One of the most interesting things to note is that pictures of the new Kara Zor-El seem to bear a striking resemblance to the art of Supergirl as re-envisioned by one of the modern era’s hottest comic book artists, Michael Turner. She has a look and air that exudes the Kara Zor-El of "World’s Finest” and the new "Supergirl” title.

I, for one, believe her addition to the series starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor may be the most significant and refreshing new casting call since Erica Durance was brought in to be the perfect new Lois Lane.
