Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Avril Lavigne has always followed the punk attitude of rebellion and defiance. Now that her creative integrity has been questioned with a copyright lawsuit, the pop punk princess is showing just how opinionated and strong she can be. 70s new wave folk group The Rubinoos have claimed that Lavigne's hit song "Girlfriend" has been plagiarized from their 1979 single "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend".
The chorus in both songs is surprisingly similar. However, the young star has hit back over the allegations via an open letter on her website. She wrote, "I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words.
All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language..
.Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off. [Songwriting partner] Luke [Gottwald] and I have done nothing wrong and there is no merit to their claim.
" The best selling artist, who writes her music with other songwriters, continued, "I am not going to sit here and defend my writing skills. I don't have to prove anything to anyone. I know who I am and what I have done and accomplished and no one can take that away from me.
" The lawsuit is still pending. Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Avril Lavigne has always followed the punk attitude of rebellion and defiance.
