Style: Make the cut

YOU'RE hearing it here first ndash; healthy looking hair is alive this winter and the tortured tresses of recent years are now officially dead.
Throw away that fire engine red hair dye and give your straightening iron a break this season because natural colours and styles are starting to replace artificial looks.
Todd Arndt of Vogue Nationale, who was recently nominated as one of the top 10 hair stylists in Australia by Harper's Bazaar, says the emphasis is now on healthy hair.

For years, you've seen that really tortured look . . .

ironed and cut into, Arndt says. Whereas now we're getting back into healthy colours and less irons.
Brunettes should draw inspiration from Drew Barrymore, blondes should look to Scarlett Johansson and reds should think Lily Cole, he says.

Blunt fringes and polished bobs are set to overtake dead straight dos and wild colours.
We're starting to see a little bit of a sway towards short hair, he says.
But you'll always see long hair in fashion.

For short (hair), we're seeing variations of bobs ndash; strong, blunt and healthy with lots of polish.
If you are keeping it long; waves, like a brushed out hot roller set or mid to high buns.
But Arndt says the most important tip is to choose a hairstyle that suits your lifestyle and a colour that suits your skin tone.

Geoffrey Herberg of Chemistry for Hair says dark, mysterious and gothic will also be a popular theme for winter. Think shadowy tones and strong simple silhouettes for cuts.
Rock chic is also prevalent ndash; grunge meets glamour with a rock 'n' roll twist, edgy and super sexy with a sense of androgyny, Herberg says.

Rock chic haircuts are shorter, with exaggerated outlines.
He says wide, heavy fringes are all the rage this season.
Herberg's salon is one of three in Queensland which have been announced as finalists at the recent state final of the L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2007 Awards.

Held in 30 countries around the globe, the L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy is a recognised indicator for local and international hair trends.
Chemistry For Hair, Ink for Hair and Rixon Hair will compete for the national title in July.
Meanwhile, Oscar Cullinan from Oscar Oscar is the only Queenslander in the running to win Australian Hairdresser of the Year at this year's 22nd Hair Expo.

The expo will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, throughout the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
