Entertainment highlights during the week of July 8-14: 1939: Frank Sinatra made his first record, singing "From the Bottom of My Heart" and "Melancholy Mood" with the Harry James Orchestra. 1956: Dick Clark made his debut as host of "Bandstand" on a Philadelphia TV station. The name was changed to "American Bandstand" when it went to ABC.

1967: Actress Vivien Leigh died of tuberculosis. She was 53. 1968: Guitarist Eric Clapton announced the break-up of Cream.

The band played a farewell concert later in the year. 1972: The State Department criticized actress Jane Fonda for making antiwar radio broadcasts in Hanoi, Vietnam. 1979: A Chicago disc jockey held a "disco demolition" between a baseball doubleheader at Comiskey Park.

The second game was called off because so much damage had been done to the field. 1985: "Playboy" and "Penthouse" magazines went on sale with nude photos of Madonna. He was 82.

1990: The movie "Ghost" was released. 1995: The Grateful Dead gave their last concert with Jerry Garcia, at Chicago's Soldier Field. 1996: NBC newsman John Chancellor died of cancer at his home in Princeton, N.

J. He was 68.
