An exhibition of 36 period costumes worn by movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow in movies that include Titanic, Dangerous Liaisons, Emma, Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility will be on exhibit at the Paine Art Center and Gardens in Oshkosh through the end of September.
The elaborate costumes will be exhibited in the grandest rooms of the historic English-style mansion. The exhibition was previously on view at the Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, a major cultural destination in Delaware, where it attracted the museum s highest attendance ever.
Fashion in Film highlights selections from the collection of period attire from Cosprop, the world-renowned costume house in London which has an inventory of about 100,000 costumes and accessories. The company makes costumes for film adaptations of classic novels, and its costumes are based on authentic period garments in cut, pattern and fabrics.
The costumes in the exhibition have been worn by famous actors in some of the most successful period television and film productions of the last few decades, including several pictures that received Oscar and Emmy nominations for costume design.
The featured costumes range from a Renaissance-era green velvet gown worn by Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth to a 1950s pink silk dress worn by Madonna in Evita. Drew Barrymore s winged party dress from Ever After, a wool coat and top hat worn by Ralph Fiennes in Onegin, and a fur shawl and feathered hat worn by Jacqueline Bisset in Murder on the Orient Express are among the costumes. Many items are accompanied by film stills showing the actors wearing them.
