New York, NY (AHN) - The annual Costume Institute Gala takes place Monday night at Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera House. This year's event celebrates the work of Paul Poiret, an artist and couturier considered France's "King of Fashion" before World War I.
Actress Cate Blanchette, creative director of Balenciaga Nicolas Ghesquiere and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour are co-chairing the gala.
The event comes in advance of the opening of an exhibition of Poiret's work, which begins May 9 and runs through August 5. Many of the garments that will be showcased have never been on display or photographed.
Poiret is well known for his Art Deco- and Ballets Russes-inspired designs.
He is credited with launching the suspender belt, flesh-colored stockings, the sack dress and culottes.
Celebrities expected to attend the event include Julianne Moore, Jennifer Garner, Kirsten Dunst, Liv Tyler and the Olsen twins.
