Before you curl up with The Secret, we suggest downloading the following songs to set the mood, if you will, to soak up the book's good vibrations. -- Magnet and Steel, by Walter Egan "Don't worry. Be happy.

" -- Don't Worry. Be Happy, by Bobby McFerrin "If I can see it, then I can do it If I just believe it, there's nothing to it" -- I Believe I Can Fly, by R Kelly "Just what makes that little old ant, Think he'll move that rubber tree plant, Anyone knows an ant, can't, But he's got high hopes, he's got high hopes, He's got high apple pie, in the sky hopes, So any time you're gettin' low, 'stead of lettin' go, -- High Hopes, as recorded by Frank Sinatra "You've got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative, -- Accentuate the Positive, as recorded by Bing Crosby "Pick out a pleasant outlook, Wipe off that 'full of doubt' look, Slap on a happy grin! And spread sunshine all over the place, Just put on a happy face!

" -- Put on a Happy Face, from the musical Bye, Bye Birdie "You're a shining star, no matter who you are -- Shining Star, by Earth, Wind Fire "Go forward. Move ahead. Try to detect it.

Its not too late. To whip it. Whip it good.

" -- Whip It, by Devo "Oh, there's a lot of opportunities, If you know when to take them, you know? There's a lot of opportunities, If there aren't, you can make them, Make or break them." At Books at Sunset in Elgin, owner Judi Brownfield said she is selling out orders of 15 books each time she gets them in stock.

Brownfield agreed that the book seems to owe a bit to Norman Vincent Peale's 1950s work, The Power of Positive Thinking , which basically asserted that thinking good things leads to good things happening for you.
At the Barnes Noble in West Dundee, a clerk who requested his name not be used said the book is selling exceptionally well. "The reason is because it's been on Oprah," he said.

"And look at the pretty paper."
Byrne's book is printed on faux parchment to invoke the days of da Vinci. Its pages hold the bite-sized musings of modern-ay can-do New Age type thinkers such as Bob Doyle, the guy behind the Wealth Beyond Reason program; John Gray, author of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus; and Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul co-author Marci Shimoff, as well as pointers from pioneers of such thinking including Prentice Mulford, a founder of the New Thought movement, and Wallace Wattles, whose The Science of Getting Rich came out in 1910.

The work's message: "The Great Secret of Life is the law of attraction. The law of attraction says like attracts like, so when you think a thought, you are also attracting like thoughts to you."
"If people believe they can be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they have no control over outside circumstances, those thoughts of fear, separation and powerlessness, if persistent, can attract them to being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"
"Make it your intention to look at everything you like and say to yourself, 'I can afford that, I can buy that.' Begin right now to shout to the universe, 'Life is so easy! Life is so good!

All good things come to me!'"
"Thoughts are magnetic, and thoughts have frequency. You are like a human transmission tower.

Your thoughts become things.
