BIRTHDAY GUY: Much-beloved actor and comedian Bill Cosby was born on this date in Philadelphia in 1937. Cosby joined the Navy in his teens and completed high school via a correspondence course, then went on to Temple University on an athletics scholarship. Cosby s breakout role came in the 1965 TV series, I Spy for which he won several Emmy Awards.

Continuing his education, Cosby earned a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts. His immensely successful The Cosby Show from 1984-1992 made him a pivotal force in television, allowing Cosby to promote improved minority portrayal in television and other social issues. Cosby and his wife Camille have been married more than 40 years.
