*Sometime this Fall, the world will get to see another side of Janet Jackson, according to her current film director, Tyler Perry.
The Jackson family standout has a plum role in Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married,” which is currently in production for a nationwide release in October or November. But Perry is warning viewers not to expect the Janet Jackson we’ve all come to recognize on the red carpet and in music videos.
"She's playing a college professor — actually, an author and professor of psychology," Perry tells the Los Angeles Daily News. As for doubters who remember Jackson’s struggle to nail her “hood girl” character in “Poetic Justice,” Perry says Jackson "absolutely" has the skills to pull off the part convincingly.
"I can't wait for people to see her like this," said Perry, whose film is based on his stage play about the ups and downs of marriage.
Meanwhile, Janet’s man Jermaine Dupri said she will soon follow him from Virgin to Island Records, where he is President of Urban Music under Island Def Jam Chairman L.A. Reid.
Dupri, who made the move in February from a similar role at Virgin, tells MTV News that Janet is set to join him in the near future.
"Definitely Janet will end up at Island," said Dupri. "That's without a doubt.
L.A. always wanted to sign her regardless [of whether] I was there or not.
I don't know where that deal is — I left that in the hands of L.A. and Janet's people — but more than likely, he'll get what he wants.
"
Dupri said Jackson will also release a single this summer on the “Rush Hour 3” soundtrack, which will be released on Island following a deal recently put together by Dupri.
"Janet will have one of the first singles off the album," he said. "Bow Wow will be on the soundtrack.
A couple usual suspects should pop up on the soundtrack, but I want it to be something unique [to] incorporate the new [Island Def Jam] family I'm with. I'mma see what Luda's doing, what Jay is doing. I'mma see if I can get some records from people.
"
Perry also said Janet would contribute a single to the “Why Did I Get Married” soundtrack as well.
