He met business and personal partner Andrew Goetz 14 years ago in New York City. Andrew had extensive marketing experience with a Swiss furniture manufacturer. Matthew is dry and sensitive.
Andrew is oily. Matthew's suffered from rosacea, eczema, seborrhea and "I'm allergic to synthetic fragrances." Matthew's favorite product is their grapefruit cleanser.
On what he says makes their products unique: "First of all, we own the idea of simplicity. Our product is created to be a unisex line of products that's appropriate for a man or woman, any skin type, and how a couple might shop for and actually use products together." Another goal -- to cut down on bathroom and medicine chest clutter.
Matthew wants his products to "sit out and always look beautiful" on the counter. On his best skin care tip: And always use a sunscreen. On what's in his parents' bathroom in Davison, near Flint: "My dad is the biggest convert ever.
" Dad Gary is using his son's cleanser and moisturizer, although pop has "been a hard sell for a body cleanser." Matthew says mom Bernice is pickier. "My mother was a hairdresser, so she won't use our shampoos, and there are all these other hairdresser things she does, but aside from that, she does use everything.
" Elton John, Janet Jackson, Ashley Olsen -- "these are the ones I can name. Lo has purchased our fragrance, Rum Tonic, at Barney's in Beverly Hills." On what he learned from the cosmetics counter at Hudson's Fairlane: "To be diplomatic and on par with service.
I remember one time distinctly I lost my cool with a customer. And I remember thinking my career is over. Customers are going to challenge you, (so) bite your lip, and realize that they're right.
