Doctors and cosmetic giants reveal the Next Big Thing. You've heard of the iPod Nano, but what about nanosomes in your face cream? L'Oreal's scientists have created teeny capsules called nanosomes that penetrate hair and skin where regular molecules can't.

The French brand - which spent 533 million euros (US$717.73 million) last year on cosmetic and dermatological research - used the technology for its Dermo Expertise Revitalift Double Lifting anti-ageing product. This delivers vitamin A derivative Pro-retinol deep into the skin.

Protein isn't just a buzzword for those on the Atkins diet. Cosmeceuticals (cosmetic products that claim to have drug-like benefits) have recently included protein to repair skin damage, says plastic surgeon Ivor Lim. These proteins, also called cytokines, are derived from normal cells or stem cells and are touted to be the next major breakthrough in skincare.

Dr Marco Lens of Zelens Skincare has developed a patented system delivering ingredients into the skin with liposomes. Liposomes, or fine spherical particles that have structures similar to skin, allow the penetration and release of active ingredients in the skin that target different molecules within the cell structure. We all know that an orange a day keeps the cold bug away.

But rather than ingesting vitamin C, why not smear it on your skin? According to dermatologist Cheong Wai Kwong, vitamin C not only has an anti oxidant effect, but it also promotes the growth of collagen and lightens pigmentation. How about this: collagen fragments that trick the skin into thinking it needs to make new collagen, thus helping it repair itself.

That's what the men in white coats at Clinique have come up with in Repairwear Deep Wrinkle Concentrate. Doctors and cosmetic giants reveal the Next Big Thing.
