"Letters From Iwo Jima" -- The second part of director Clint Eastwood's masterwork about the battle of Iwo Jima and the men who fought it ("Flags of Our Fathers" was the first) offers a look at the Japanese perspective during World War II. Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai") portrays the strong-willed general charged with defending the island from attack. In Japanese with subtitles.

"Apocalypto" -- It's rare that we get one foreign-language film with mainstream audience appeal. Here's another in the same week of releases. Director Mel Gibson's bloody action-adventure centers on early Mayan civilization, and a young man who is captured by an enemy tribe and carted off to a violent world where human sacrifice is practiced.

Through a twist of fate, he escapes his captors and, spurred by the love of the woman he left behind, tries to make it back to his home. In Mayan with English subtitles.
"The Good German" -- George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire star in director Steven Soderbergh's tribute to Hollywood Golden Age dramas such as "Casablanca.

" It may not measure up to that World War II classic, but the black-and-white melodrama about passions and betrayals in post-war Berlin still captivates.
Also out today: "Epic Movie," a satire on big-budget excess from the "Scary Movie" filmmakers, and "Venus," with Oscar-nominated Peter O'Toole in a touching romantic comedy-drama. TV-on-DVD offerings include the fifth season of "Scrubs," first season of "Kyle XY," second season of "Martin" and the fourth season of "The O.
