The four stories spans three continents and four cultures and are linked by a single gunshot. Chieko, the story of the lonely deaf-mute was personally the most compelling. The scenes in the club, where we hear the techno-beat of , we see the people enjoying themselves and dancing to the music.
Then the scene goes silent with only the faintest muffled thump-thump of the base in the background, we collectively experience the isolation of Chieko’s deafness. There are four basic parts to this film. Two Moroccan brothers who herd goats live with their parents and sister in the desert.
The younger boy masturbates while thinking of his naked sister in the well house. The boys get a gun to hunt jackals, but shoot a bus instead because they are stupid. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, get away to Morocco to try to salvage their trouble marriage and make sense of the SIDS death of their infant child.
Susan (Blanchett) is shot and Richard (Pitt) can't get help because the government thinks it’s a terrorist attack. Susan has to pee so Richard puts a pan under her ass and they kiss and make-up while she makes tinkle in the pan. (Probably one of the most oddly erotic scenes I have ever watched in a movie).
The Japanese businessman who gave the gun to the Arab guide, who sold it to the father of the masturbating boy, has a daughter who is deaf. The girl is despondent over the death of her mother and suffers from extreme isolation due to her inability to connect with other people. In desperation, she seeks attention by any means, including sexual encounters with her dentist and a police detective.
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett have a son and a daughter (Elle Fanning); their Mexican housekeeper is desperate to go to her son’s wedding in Mexico. Susan inconveniences everyone by getting shot; Richard implores the maid to stay on a couple of extra days to watch the kids. Instead, Amelia (Barraza) unwisely takes the kids with her, across the boarder to a raucous Mexican wedding.
Upon her return, they can’t re-enter the U.S. because her nephew is intoxicated and she lacks proper papers for the children.
