Subscribe to Archivestuff Have your say Oscar-winning British actress Rachel Weisz best known for The Mummy and The Mummy Returns is to star in Peter Jackson's next film The Lovely Bones. Weisz will play the mother of 14-year-old Susie Salmon, who is murdered, but continues to observe her family from heaven.
The film is based on the novel by American writer Alice Sebold, a bestseller in New Zealand since it was announced Jackson would turn it into a US$80 million (NZ$106 million) film. Weisz, 36, won an Oscar as best supporting actress for The Constant Gardener in 2005. She has worked with Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Jude Law and Ralph Fiennes and regularly stars in mainstream Hollywood and arthouse films including The Fountain directed by her fiance Darren Aronofksy and About a Boy.
As well as directing, Jackson co- wrote the script with partner Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens the writing team for The Lord of the Rings and King Kong. Depending on how closely the film follows Sebold's novel, Weisz is the first of six major roles to be cast. The most anticipated casting will be whether a new or established young actress is cast as Susie.
It was reported in 2005 that 13-year-old Dakota Fanning, best known for playing Tom Cruise's daughter in War of the Worlds, auditioned for the part, but it was not confirmed by Jackson. Jackson's films have launched the careers of several stars, including Kate Winslet, Melanie Lynskey, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Karl Urban and Marton Csokas.
