Bookspan, parent company of Book-of-the-Month Club and several other book clubs, said today it will lay off about 296 Bookspan and Yes Solutions employees at its facilities in Mechanicsburg and Hanover beginning in September.
Paula Botson, a spokeswoman for Bertelsmann, the parent company of Bookspan, said most of the layoffs, 244, will occur at the company's Mechanicsburg plant at 1225 S. Market St.

The layoffs are part of a continuing consolidation of facilities and functions that began after Bertelsmann acquired from Time Warner the part of Bookspan it did not already own.
Botson said the transaction processing department that had been at Mechanicsburg will be consolidated into the Indianapolis operation. Warehousing and returns functions carried out at Mechanicsburg about 100 of the jobs to be lost there will move to the Hanover facility.

Employees will be allowed to transfer to Hanover if they choose. The 52 jobs to be lost at Hanover are in a different category.
Specialty printing will be outsourced from Mechanicsburg to a third-party vendor, Botson said.

The call center and some information technology and administrative functions will remain at Mechanicsburg, about 248 jobs in all.
Botson did not know whether the annual summer book sale held for years at the Mechanicsburg facility would continue in the absence of a book warehouse, but she said she was exploring the question further.
