Movie Review - Breach

In recent times, spy films have been heavy on the action side, sometimes to the detriment of the storyline, but Breach harks back to cat-and-mouse games and the deliberate pacing is much more realistic than a faster-paced action thriller would have been.
The events that are recreated here really happened, so like Shattered Glass (also by writer/director Billy Ray) the film doesn't glamourise what happened.
It is more a study in the art of betrayal than a documentary, though it never truly explains why Robert Hanssen (Chris Cooper) betrays his country.


Eric O'Neill's (Ryan Phillipe) fresh-faced boy scout looks and innocent wide-eyed demeanour hide an ambition to become an FBI field agent.
