Catherine says, 'Have fun on vacation'

By the time you read this, I'll be on a much-needed vacation. I'm off until July 5, and although I really wanted to take a whirlwind trip to San Francisco or New York City, I realized I'd be so tired when I got back that it wouldn't feel like I had even been off. So, I've decided instead to visit friends in LA and San Diego, and to go to some places I've always wanted to see.

I love going to museums (and their gift shops), and I have always wanted to go visit the La Brea Tar Pits. The Page Museum has a huge number of extinct Ice Age plants and animals displays, and shows what life was like in L.A.

during the last Ice Age. It's interesting to think that before there were crowded freeways and a Starbucks on every corner, there were woolly mammoths roaming the basin. Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, 5801 Wilshire Blvd.

, Los Angeles. $7 for adults, $4.50 for seniors and students with ID.

Although I'm a native of Southern California, and I've been to Disneyland about a million times, I've never paid a visit to Universal Studios. I've been to CityWalk, and I saw No Doubt at the Universal (now Gibson) Amphitheater, but I've never actually been inside the park. Last year, the company gave us all free tickets, and they expire in December, which has me motivated to finally visit this week.

Universal Studios has a ton of rides: Revenge of the Mummy, Jurassic Park and Back to the Future are the big ones. I'm looking forward to going on the studio tour, and Shrek 4-D sounds interesting. I'll be passing on Fear Factor Live (that show is ridiculously awful) and anything that involves steep drops and getting soaked.

A tip from my boss: He just went to Universal Studios with his family, and paid $10 for parking. Because so many people met at the park, they had to pay a lot of money. Later, they found out that if you see a movie at Universal Studio's huge movie theater, parking is free.

So, the moral of the story is, if you'd rather spend your money on entertainment as opposed to parking, then plan ahead and set aside about two hours for a film.
