Newly elected to Congress, Evan Baxter, is the next one anointed by God to accomplish a holy mission. Evan leaves Buffalo behind and brings his family to suburban northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned around when God appears and commands him to build an ark.
Once again, god is back in action and ready to ruin (well, only slightly ruin) someone else s life. Last time around he gave his powers to Bruce Nolan, you re know it all and want to be all news reporter, A.K.
A "Mr. This time around, god isn t giving his powers away, but instead will choose someone and make him build an ark. Evan Baxter is that someone, he seems to fit the bill perfectly, over confident, nice family and an overall beautiful life.
But, when Evan receives a strange delivery on his doorstep which included tools to build something, he becomes slightly nervous and wonders what to do with the tools. Another day passes and Evan wakes up at 6:14am because his alarm went off at that time, Evan clearly remembers that he didn t put his alarm at that time. If that s not bad enough, Evan get s another delivery, this time its wood.
Evan than meets God; God meets Evan, God then tells Evan that he must build an Ark before the great flood. So-on and so fourth. Steve Carell is definitely becoming one of the funniest actors in showbiz.
Anchorman, 40 year old virgin, bewitched, over the hedge and the popular tv series "The Office", made us all laugh out loud with Steve s utterly witty remarks and his hilarious screaming(am I the only one who laughs when Steve screams?) . But, he s only truly funny when he s let loose, naturally lot s of movies restrain some comedians, and this is the case with Evan Almighty.
Its an almighty shame that Steve isn t let loose in this comedy, sure, his style is still there and ends up screaming a lot and some jokes are boring but sound funnier when Steve tells them. This is one of those movies in which the best parts and comedy are portrayed and revealed in the commercials and trailers. There are only a couple of new and funny remarks in the actual film, but we ve already seen some of the funniest parts in the trailer, which unfortunately makes the film a little less enjoyable.
But, besides all those flaws, is the film better than Bruce Almighty? The answer is unfortunately no. Simply because, in my opinion, there s only so much comedy you can have in a movie about building an Ark.
Bruce Almighty had all god s powers and used it to his full extent, unfortunately for Evan, all he s got are animals following him everyday and birds taking a dump on his nice suit. Jim Carrey had chemistry with Morgan freeman and Jennifer Anniston, but Steve Carell just doesn t seem to have that special something which Jim Carrey had. Its not exactly an almighty flop but is sure isn t almighty fantastic either.
The animals come in hundreds and are very well coordinated in certain scenes. A lot of the animals are also CG, but its really hard to distinguish the real from the CG, most of the time. When a flood actually happens, the effects are good enough and nice enough to look at and say that it kinda looks real.
Most of the time you have to wait until something fun happens, it takes a while before you laugh out loud, a couple of smirks here and there, but nothing more than that. The whole movie ends up being very interesting when Evan starts to build his ark and doesn t stop. John Goodman is in this movie, but seriously wasn t 100% necessary to have his character in the movie, they could have used the mayor of the city instead, or what-not.
Also, you don t feel for the characters, when you see Steve cry, you feel like crying with laughter instead. Overall, it wasn t as good as Bruce Almighty, but was still a movie worth experiencing, but only in the presence of the lord. Share your own Opinion by writing your own review for this movie.
