More Troubles in the HD DVD/Blu-ray Wars More woes surface over the launch of the HD DVD format; Blu-ray is out in front. As the war rages on, there is yet no clear winer though Blu-ray appears to be out in front. But Hollywood is still split over the competing formats.

Time Warner introduced its Total HD disc earlier this year that is a compromise between the incompatible Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Total HD discs contain a Blu-ray copy of a movie on one side and an HD DVD version on the other. Warner Brothers has decided to delay it's launch of its dual format until later next year.

Warner believes other studios must also embrace both formats along with the Total HD technology and release at least 10 popular titles before stores would be willing to devote shelf space to the discs. That is unlikely to happen by the fourth quarter, leading the company to push back the introduction until early next year. Currently, a majority of studios are backing Blu-ray including Sony or course, Walt Disney Co.

and others. Several hardware makers sell players that can accommodate both formats. The high-def discs, which offer sharper pictures and more room to hold interactive features and games, won't play on standard DVD machines.
