One of Hollywood's best-known stars, the veteran actor Paul Newman, says he is to retire at the age of 82. Newman, a nine-time Oscar nominee with more than 50 films to his name, said he was no longer able to work at the level he would want to. The Ohio-born actor's films include The Sting, Cool Hand Luke, and The Colour of Money, for which he won a best actor Oscar award in 1986.
Newman announced his decision in an interview with US broadcaster ABC. "I'm not able to work anymore as an actor and still at the level that I would want to," he said. "I'm just, you know, you start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention.
So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me." Newman's career on stage and screen has spanned more than five decades. One of his biggest hits was the 1969 Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which he starred with Robert Redford.
The two joined up again in 1973 when they played con men in The Sting. Recent projects have included 2002's Road to Perdition and the TV mini-series Empire Falls, for which Newman won an Emmy. He has also focussed on his food production company, the profits of which he gives to charity, and established a number of camps for critically ill children.
He has been married to actress Joanne Woodward since 1958.
