Indians have an extreme liking for concepts and ideas that are invented outside India, primarily in the West. Movies, TV shows, fashion, construction, architecture, interiors, restaurants, offices take significant inspiration from the West. One guy copies a foreign idea and others copy this copier.
If China had success with SEZs, India needs to do the same. If Bangladesh had success with micro finance, Indians joined the bandwagon. Sam Walton revolutionized retailing in US, so Mukesh Ambani took upon himself to repeat that in India.
If Tatas made a big acquisition, Reliance and all others saw an immediate need to jump on the bandwagon. If online social networking became suddenly popular, Indian tech entrepreneurs jumped upon this million dollar idea. With the success of discount airlines in US, their clones popped up in India and multiplied to an extent that no one makes money now :(
All is well that ends well.
I guess copying is not bad as long as it helps us. And it's not just India, rest of developing world apes developed world as well.
I wonder when would the philanthropy bug bite the Indian tycoons.
Should they not try to imitate Ted Turner, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet? Wouldn't it be prudent for Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai to copy Angelina Jolie, Bono??
