A closer look at the summer 2007 movie slate reveals a surprising number of films that aren't likely to repeat overworked formulas -- or insult adult intelligence. Many of these are small, independent productions that may require a little seeking out, but at least you can see them if you live in the L.A.

area. In most other parts of the country, "Ocean's Thirteen" is about as sophisticated as it's gonna get. The following movies are among those scheduled to open in Southern California through Labor Day.

All dates are subject to change.
11 "Delta Farce": Larry the Cable Guy thinks he's being sent to Iraq. Relax, dude, it turns out you're in Mexico.

It's a comedy.
"The Ex": Zach Braff has to work for his father-in-law ..

. and with his wife's old boyfriend (Jason Bateman), whom everyone likes better.
"Georgia Rule": Wild child Lindsay Lohan causes trouble and has to be sternly reprimanded.

That's not a tabloid story; it's the plot of this movie. Jane Fonda plays the common-sense grandma who lays down the law.
"The Hip Hop Project": Documentary about a New York program that teaches underprivileged youths how to rap.

"Provoked": Indian bride (Aishwarya Rai) kills her abusive British husband.
"The Salon": Based on a play called "Beauty Shop." Sounds a lot like the movie "Beauty Shop.

" This one stars Vivica A. Fox.
"The Short Life of Jose Antonio Gutierrez": Documentary about the first U.

S. soldier to die in Iraq.
"28 Weeks Later": Those British rage zombies that we thought were taken care of in "28 Days Later"?

Unh-unh.
