It’s Yorkshire’s biggest movie event of the year. The Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) is staging its annual awards – the Bollywood Oscars – here for the first time. It’s part of a weekend-long celebration of Indian film culture taking place right across the county.
Celebrities from Bollywood and the west will join members of the public in a colourful pageant the likes of which has seldom been seen. We will also be speaking to some of the international writers who dominate the best-seller lists at shops around the region, and the world. The world premiere of the Bollywood blockbuster The Train, a passionate thriller revolving around an extra-marital affair, is a sparkling prelude to the glitz of awards night two days later. Kicked off by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, umpired by Dickie Bird and featuring actor Greg Wise alongside several ex-England greats, with the toss-up assisted by Celebrity Big Brother star Shilpa Shetty - this cricket match is a one-off. Headingley Carnegie Stadium is hosting an A-list Team IIFA, boasting the cricketing prowess of Kapil Dev, former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, actor Zayed Khan and many more, against England cricketing greats including Devon Malcolm, Gladstone Small, Robin Smith and Phillip Defreitas.
