Record numbers are getting married today – the luckiest day – in the hope the date – 7/7/07 – will bring them good luck in their lives together. Churches, wedding places and registry offices across the region have reported being booked out for months by superstitious lovebirds hoping to be lucky in love. And it's all because of the three number sevens in today's date.

Seven is considered to be mystical by numerologists and thought of as bringing good luck in many different cultures and religions. One Wearside couple getting wed today is Helen Richardson, 25, and Tony Rodda, 38, from Bywell Avenue, Fulwell, who booked their wedding service at St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth, last year. District nurse Helen, said: "We knew we wanted a summer wedding and when we saw the date, 07.

07.07, we thought it would be brilliant. "I think St Peter's is beautiful, so we were lucky to get it because a lot of people wanted this date.

"I am not superstitious, but my mam is, so she will be glad we are getting married on this day." Tony works as a fitness instructor at Raich Carter Sports Centre and he and Helen met when she joined one of his classes. On Valentine's day Tony gave Helen a dozen red roses and they went on their first date.

Helen said: "We both knew straight away that we would be together. "Just a few weeks later we booked a holiday to the Dominican Republic, and that is where Tony proposed." The couple are having a sit-down meal for 80 at the National Glass Centre followed by a disco for 120 guests, with magicians, stilt walkers, cariacature drawers and a disco.

They have been having secret dancing lessons for their bridal waltz befor jetting off for two weeks honeymoon in the Maldives. Chris Moon, 30 and Julie Grimes, 26, from St Peter's Wharf, Bonnersfield, met three and a half years ago when Helen worked as a barmaid in Chaplins and Chris came in as a customer. Chris, a floor tiler for gentoo, proposed to Julie this time last year and the two Sunderland AFC season ticket holders decided to book their wedding and their reception at the Stadium of Light.

Julie who now works as a nurserynurse in Town End Farm Primary School said: "We booked the date by chance and we were lucky to get it. "Everything is booked up for this date so I'm glad we started looking around early for photographs and cakes and things." The couple are such big Sunderland fans that the Black Cats theme runs right throughout the wedding day.

Julie is wearing an Ivory dress, the bridesmaids' dresses are red and the flower girls dresses are white. Even the posies of roses are red and white. There will be 55 guests for the ceremony and daytime do and more than 200 are expected for the disco in the evening.

For their honeymoon the newly-weds are going to Ireland for Sunderland's pre-season tour. But they're not hanging around in the Emerald Isle and will be back home in Sunderland for the Juventus friendly game on August 4.
